At this point I wasn’t confident that I was making the correct choices, so I went to my local accountant and paid them to establish the company for me. I think I paid them about $500, and after a week or so they sent me all my company documents, my ABN (Australian Business Number), ACN (Australian Company Number), and a stack of other documents which I’ve never had to look at again.
When choosing your accountant, I’d advise speaking to a few and finding one you get along with. Your accountant will be a big part of your business and you definitely want to find someone who takes an active role in helping your business succeed. Also, you want them to be trustworthy, knowledgable, confident, and easy to contact. If you find out down the track that your accountant isn’t meeting these requirements, sack them! Be ruthless and find someone who is on your team.
I won’t attempt to advise you on the best way to structure your business, I chose to setup as a company, but there a few other ways you can choose. Speak to your accountant about this.
